Karate Kata DVD

What’s on the DVD

The DVD has taken two years to make and runs for 1 hour, 34 minutes. The DVD shows Kata, which are a form or pattern of pre-conceived movements, representing defences and counter-attacks.

There are fifteen Kata on the DVD, each one being filmed from three directions:

  • slow speed, 45 degrees, from the right-hand side
  • fast speed, 45 degrees, from the left-hand side
  • slow speed, from behind

embusenThese directions cover every movement performed, and also give an indication of the speed of movement, the breathing control, and the focus of energy. To aid a deeper understanding of the pattern of movement, each kata also features an embusen displayed on-screen.

Each Kata also has an accompanying page of text (on-screen), which gives an insight into the history and background of the Kata - as shown below.

TEKKI SHODAN
The karate-do Kyohan has the meaning of Tekki Shodan as "horse riding", referring to the use of kiba dachi. Other recognised meanings of Tekki are "sideways fighting" and "surreptitious steps".

There are three Tekki kata. Tekki Nidan and Tekki Sandan were created by Master Itosu as training kata and were based on the original Tekki Shodan, which is an old Shuri-te kata.

Some of the movements are clarified to the viewer / practictioner by demonstrating the movements with an opponent attacking, so creating the relevant application.

The Kata included on the tape are as follows:

  • Taikyoku Shodan (Kion Kata)
  • Heian Shodan
  • Heian Nidan
  • Heian Sandan
  • Heian Yondan
  • Heian Godan
  • Tekki Shodan
